Musician, Student and Humanitarian

Bukuru Celestin is originally from Burundi, Africa, and moved to the United States just a few years ago. Bukuru writes, records, and performs gospel music in the Afrobeat style. He is often joined by his sisters, Furaha, Ephrasie, and Elvanie who sing background vocals on many of Bukuru’'s recordings and live performances. Bukuru Celestin is a Music Lab student who has recently graduated from Patrick Henry High School and now attends Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, VA.

Through Jefferson Center’'s Music Lab and a grant from Chamber Music America, Bukuru will be recording a full-length CD with the jazz/funk group Snarky Puppy during 2012 & 2013.
Bukuru was also featured through the Music Lab on "Japan, You Are In My Heart" a compilation CD produced to raise funds for the victims of the 2011 Japanese Earthquake: a rare opportunity for a young, Roanoke-based musician to be featured on an international compilation in support of humanitarian efforts.
